Welcome

Ti LeavesThis is the new home of Taro and Ti. This site is constantly being updated, so please return periodically to see how things are progressing – new information is being added on a daily basis. We also have lotsa yummy recipes with a decided leaning to Hawaiian foods, as well as cultural information and history around the plants I cultivate – more as this site grows. If you are interested in taro, there are many taro varieties listed and described here with more being added every day too, as well as upcoming articles to be added frequently as soon as I complete the taro listing.

I cultivate many varieties of Taro and other tropical exotics here in central Texas, some in beds and others in an earth-sheltered pit-greenhouse and some in containerized lo’i. I’m always collecting taro in an attempt to conserve heirloom varieties that are on the brink of extinction, as well as trading taro and other plants, so gimme a holler if you have taro you wish to trade.

My primary goal is to connect growers, enthusiasts and those simply interested in taro together, and thusly provide information and experience broader than my own and join together similar conservation efforts and collections. Please give consideration to joining our Yahoo discussion group – a lot of very knowledgeable people frequent that list and there is plenty of trading occurring between members as well. Please click “here to join” For those of you blessed to live in Hawaii, we do have some members who also live there who may be able to help direct you to sources there on the Islands.

For those interested in the culinary value of taro, please be aware that all parts of taro must be thoroughly cooked before consuming because taro tissue contains oxalic acid crystals that can cause inflammation if taro is eaten raw. I currently have only a very limited stock for trading thru this site – if at all – I am feverishly propagating, multiplying and growing the collection and will promptly indicate which items have reached numbers I feel comfortable with to put up for trading. The initial goal of this site is to promote the growing of these rare heirloom taros via information and dialog – the secondary purpose in time will be to help proliferate varieties of taro and other exotics. However, I may have extras on a very seasonal basis depending on growing conditions, and am forming a relationship with taro farmers so contact me on a case by case basis and I’ll happily try to track down what you’re looking for.
